Identifying Pressure Points, Critical Steps and Potential Responses
We already can identify how climate change will exacerbate some existing pressures or create new ones, such as the threat to alpine ecosystems as the climate warms or increased risk to farming from more extreme weather events. However, how climate change and other drivers might interact and create nonlinear responses that could significantly or irreversibly harm different ecosystems, their services and the downstream effects thereof is less understood. Our research stretch will integrate climate change into broader but targeted case studies that link climate with ecological, economic, and social systems to understand how their interactions might increase existing pressures or generate novel pressures or, conversely, uncover new possibilities for mitigation or adaptation.
